Canton Academy snapped Benton’s four-game winning streak Friday, overpowering the Raiders for a 28-7 win.
Panthers quarterback Gerrod Anderson came through with big plays, and the Canton defense kept the Raiders offense under pressure all night.
Anderson scored Canton’s first touchdown midway through the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
Benton responded with a strong drive, but the Raiders were stopped on fourth down inside the 20 yard line.
Canton took a 15-0 lead early in the second quarter.
With 3:44 to go before halftime Kendall Prescott turned what looked like a disastrous play into a scoring opportunity.
Prescott took the snap and immediately found himself under pressure. He scrambled until he found an opening and stretched out as he dove into the right corner of the endzone for the touchdown. Prescott’s facemask contained a chunk of the turf from the endzone as he got back up.
Barrett Whitworth added the extra point kick to cut Canton’s lead to 15-7.
Anderson added another touchdown for Canton with 8:42 to go in the third quarter. The extra point kick failed, and Canton led 21-7.
Prescott got an interception with two minutes left in the third, but Canton responded with an interception on the very next play.
Canton running back Ben Barr added the final score of the night.
Wyatt Street and Prescott led the Raiders offense. Street had 11 carries for 57 yards. Prescott scored the Raiders’ only touchdown.
Saxton Graves led the Raiders defense with 13 tackles and a sack.
John Michael Graham had 12 tackles. Prescott had seven tackles and an interception.
Easton Upshaw had seven tackles, Tyler Reynolds, Baylee Jones and Wyatt Street had six each.
Blake Moore had five tackles, and Nolan Whitworth had four. Paul Ray McGraw had three.
This week the Raiders travel to Flora to face rival Tri-County Academy in a game that will likely be a must-win to keep playoff hopes alive.
The Rebels are 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. Last week Tri-County defeated Clinton Christian 42-0.
