The District 3 Volunteer Fire Station will soon be named in honor of one of the first people to sign up to serve.
District 3 Supervisor Willie “Deuce” Wright made a motion during the Monday board meeting to name the fire station in honor of Shayne Kirk, a volunteer firefighter battling cancer.
“He was one of the first guys to sign up, and he was there every time he was needed until he wasn’t able to be,” Wright said.
Jack Willingham, Yazoo County’s Emergency Management director, said he thinks naming the station after Kirk is a perfect choice.
“He has been very dedicated to the department since the beginning, and he has handled his cancer diagnosis and all of the challenges that came with it with strength because of his faith in God,” Willingham said. “He has lost his sight, and when he was recently surprised with an award for his service he got up there and practically preached a sermon. I told him that he may have missed his true calling.”
“He’s touched a lot of people,” said District 1 Supervisor Van Foster.
The board voted unanimously to approve Wright’s motion to name the station in honor of Kirk.
