It is no secret that COVID-19 has had a tremendous financial impact on the Travel & Tourism industry.
Yazoo County's hotels, restaurants, retailers, gas stations, non-profits, and public entities have all been hit hard by reduced revenues due to travel restrictions, mandatory closures, event cancellations, and overall decreased spending due to the far-reaching financial and health impacts of the ongoing pandemic.
But, all is not lost.
Even though the lasting effects on our economy are far from being calculated, and even though the health risks are still very present, there are many ways we can come together as a community to support our local economy and help our citizens survive mentally, physically, and financially.
One important step we can take is to follow the guidelines of social distancing and wearing masks while we are continuing to support our local economy. Many of our retailers offer curbside service or the ability to shop online or through their social media pages. Our local restaurants are open for business and offering curbside pickup, carry-out, drive-thru, and some have limited dine-in service.
It is wonderful to shop with our local grocers to help sustain our economy, but hopefully you will give yourself a break from shopping and cooking as often as possible and enjoy a favorite meal from a local restaurant.
Many have had to cancel trips to far-away places. Our local annual events like YAZ Summer Blast and Yazoo Day have had to be canceled. But, we want to remind you that there are soul-stirring experiences to be had right here in Yazoo County even though our July 4th events will not be going on. We encourage you to spend some time exploring our county in ways that allow you to follow the social distancing guidelines.
While you are out picking up an order from a local restaurant or retailer, take a moment to enjoy Yazoo's historic buildings and architecture. Self-guided walking or driving tours of our historic homes and historic churches can be downloaded from our website at VisitYazoo.org.
And, the great outdoors can be enjoyed as well from one of Yazoo's many parks or the National Wildlife Refuges. Yazoo County is also home to 5 Mississippi Blues Trail Markers and additional historic sites which you can learn more about on our website.
Please take the initiative to support our local economy and Yazoo's small businesses whenever possible. We hope you will also take the time to follow VisitYazoo on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and comment and share your support often. Take photos and share your local favorites with our hashtag: #visitYazoo.
Social media is a safe and effective way for us to keep you updated on upcoming events and local tourism & travel opportunities that help support our economy right here at home.
Now more than ever, we must work together as Yazooans to help lift each other up and support the friends, family, and neighbors that make up our local economy and our community.
Have a safe and happy Independence Day.
