Lucille J. Smith
Lucille J. Smith was born May 11, 1934 to the late Tom Jones and Jessie Ellis in Yazoo City, MS. To family, she was momma, granny, big granny, and to others she was known as "Snuff." She confessed a belief in Jesus Christ at an early age at New King Solomon Baptist Church where she served as mother, choir member, and mission for sixty-four years until God called her home on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
Lucille attended Yazoo City Training School. She was employed with the Yazoo City Municipal School District as well as Kings Daughters Hospital for several years.
She was united in holy matrimony in 1953 to the late Homer Smith and to this union eight children were born. She and her husband also raised six other children in their home. She leaves to cherish her memory six daughters; Carolyn (Fred) Steele of Tunica, MS, Wanda (Mitch) Williams of Memphis, TN, Crystal Smith of Yazoo City, MS, Maggie Henderson, Florence (Bill) Donaldson of Chicago, IL, and Wanda Ward of Jackson, MS; three sons, Homer (Connie) Smith of Greenville, MS, Curtis (Bridgette) Smith of Dallas, TX, and Kenneth Smith of Yazoo City, MS. A special daughter-in-law Tracey Wilson of Vicksburg, MS; and her canine companions Blue and Spot. She also helped raise two grandchildren, Correm Anderson and Carrington Smith.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Michael Smith and Tom Dansby; her daughters, Pastor Gladys Everett and Kim Vinson; as well as a special sister-in-law, Dorothy Brown. She leaves a host of grandchildren, great grands, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Services for Lucille Smith will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 11 a.m. at Word of Faith Christian Center, located at 407 Jackson Avenue in Yazoo City.
