Katie Mae Kirk Kates, 90, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2016 after suffering a stroke. She was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi on February 19, 1926 to Bryan Kirk and Johnnie Boatright Kirk and was a long time member of Melrose Baptist Church at Myrleville.
Living life to the fullest was Katie’s goal. She maintained her own household and cut her grass on the day before she fell ill. At her request, Katie’s 90th birthday was celebrated by her family with a crawfish boil which ended with her grandsons taking her mudding.
Katie was preceeded in death by her parents, husband Robert Kates and son Mark Kates. Survivors include children: Bruce Kates (Carla) of Morgan City, LA, Kae Kates Covington of Braxton, MS, and Beth Kates of Bentonia, MS. She leaves 12 grandchildren: Austin Kates, Kaitlin Kates, Alexis Kates, Wesley Kates, Nick Kates (Tammy), David Fedrick (Connie), Aaron Fedrick (Michelle), Bryan Fedrick (Megan), Gabriel Lancaster, Joshua Jeter (Kristen), Kody Kates (Jessica), and Amy Lowyns (Bill). Katie also leaves 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Melrose Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 12:30 at the church.
Grandsons Aaron Fedrick,Bryan Fedrick, Gabriel Lancaster, Austin Kates, Wesley Kates, Nick Kates, Kody Kates, & Josh Jetter will serve as pallbearers, with Kaitlin Kates & Alexis Kates serving as honorary pallbearers.
