Erline Pogue Brown, 91, of Starkville, passed away Monday, January 4, 2016.
Funeral services are Sunday at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Starkville with Rev. Clifton Curtis officiating.
Mrs. Brown was born on August 4, 1924, in Eupora. She was the daughter of the late Luther Estel Pogue and Cora McCain Pogue of Eupora.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lavell Wheeler Brown, Jr., Esq., of Starkville; and one infant daughter, Betty Rose McGarr.
Survivors include four sons: Jimmy George McGarr, Jr. of Terry, Lt. Col. Lavell Wheeler Brown, III, USAF (Ret.), Hugh Lawson Brown, Esq., and Charles Bruce Brown, Esq., of Starkville; and two daughters, Judith Brown Isonhood, Ed.S., of Brandon, and Susan Brown-Skrobot, Ph.D., of Hillsborough, N.J. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren (and three on the way), and many loved nieces and nephews.
Erline Brown was a cosmetologist for over 50 years and had a 32 year career working for AT&T and South Central Bell in Yazoo City and Jackson. She was an avid and successful investor in real estate throughout Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Her husband, L.W. Brown, Jr., was a Mason and Shriner, and she was proud to be a member of the Eastern Star and Daughter of the Nile. Prior to her move to assisted living, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Starkville.
Because Erline had to work and was denied the opportunity for a full education, she always encouraged her children to excel in their careers and to pursue an education. This is evidenced by the fact that all six of her children have a master’s degree or above and all of her 17 grandchildren have either graduated from or have plans to attend college.
Memorials may be made to the Lavell Wheeler Brown, Jr. and Erline Pogue Brown Memorial Scholarship to Mississippi State University Foundation, PO Box 6149, Mississippi State, MS 39762 [MSUFoundation.com], or Hinds Community College Foundation, P O Box 1100, Raymond, MS 39154.
