Investigators are still trying to determine if a Yazoo City man was assaulted or had an accident that landed him in the hospital earlier this week.
Police Ron Sampson said the victim was discovered inside a building Monday morning with head wounds after friends reported last seeing him the previous Friday.
“The last time he was seen by a friend was last Friday,” Sampson said. “His friend tried contacting him over the weekend. He was staying inside an old tobacco shop (formerly Habits) on Jerry Clower Boulevard. When his friend was able to get inside, he found the victim on the floor with two large gashes on his head.”
Sampson investigators did not find any weapons at the scene, but they did notice there were no lights in the building and there were large pieces of machinery and sharp objects inside.
“We don’t know if he fell and tried to get up, falling again,” Sampson said. “There were a lot of things he could have tripped over in there. But we don’t know if it was from an assault either.”
Sampson said the victim is conscious but is not responding. He added that investigators are canvassing the area and talking with two neighboring businesses.
“One of those businesses has video surveillance,” Sampson said. “We are trying to pull that video to see it leads us to whether it was an accident or assault.”
