Former Ward 3 Alderman Clifton Jones died this week.
Jones was first elected as an alderman in a special election following the resignation of the late James “Bay Lear” Magee. Jones was then elected to a full term.
He vacated the seat for an unsuccessful campaign for mayor during the last municipal election cycle.
Jones was often outspoken, both during his tenure as alderman and earlier as member of the board of the Public Service Commission.
Ward 4 Alderman Aubry Brent Jr., often found himself at odds with Jones during city meetings, but he said they remained friends even when they disagreed.
“We had our differences on certain political issues and things we wanted to accomplish, but after every meeting, we went back to the way we always were before,” Brent said.
Brent said Jones was dedicated to improving Yazoo City.
“He was very intelligent, knew city government well and had strong ambitions,” Brent said. “He had a lot more to offer the city.”
Funeral arrangements had not been completed at press time.
