A new human case of West Nile virus in Lamar County brings the state's total to five for the year.
Mississippi is currently in peak season for West Nile infections, and protection against mosquito-borne illnesses remains important:
* Use mosquito repellent that contains an EPA-approved ingredient such as DEET while you are outdoors.
* Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquito breeding.
* Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors.
* Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent.
From 2013 to 2015, 13 Mississippians died as a result of West Nile virus infection.
