In preparation for the 2020 election, Yazoo City native Mike Espy announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate this week.
Espy was the first African-American to represent the state in the House of Representatives and to serve as the United States Secretary of Agriculture. He said his family history, which includes establishing the first hospital for African-Americans in Yazoo City, shapes his desire and lifelong devotion to Mississippians.
Espy said his campaign will have a committed focus on access to health care, better job opportunities, support for Mississippi’s farmers, and improvements to public education. He added that it will work to bring people together to find bipartisan solutions to issues facing every Mississippian.
“Mississippi is changing,” Espy said. “That’s why I’m running for Senate. I want us to meet our potential to be a state we can all be proud of.”
