Cape Cod murder suspect arrested in Yazoo

A suspect in a New England murder case was arrested in Yazoo County this week by the United States Marshal Service.

William Hayes, 37, was arrested at a relative’s house in Yazoo County last Friday by the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Hayes was wanted for the Oct. 16 shooting death of Darrell Russ, of Hyannis, Mass.

The victim was shot outside a commercial building with an autopsy reporting his cause of death was three gunshot wounds.

Proceedings will begin to transfer Hayes back to Massachusetts.

Hayes, originally from Belzoni, has a lengthy criminal history.

In 2012, Hayes was charged with spraying a Cape Cod neighborhood with bullets. No one was injured in the incident, and he was apprehended on the run in Florida. He was later found guilty.

In 2004, Hayes pleaded guilty to arson for a fire at a Cape Cod motel and possessing a Molotov cocktail and served 18 months.

He was also charged as a fugitive from justice because he violated his Mississippi probation for a two-year sentence of cocaine distribution.
