A suspect remains in jail after a domestic dispute led to a car chase with shots fired in Yazoo County last week.
More arrests could be forthcoming as the investigation uncovers that more people were aware of the shooting and failed to report it to law enforcement.
Joseph Smith, 18, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
“The female victim allegedly believed an ex-boyfriend was inside another vehicle, which led to an argument between the victim and the passengers in the other car,” said Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department. “The situation escalated into road rage with the suspect shooting into the victim’s car, which held three people, including a minor.”
Gann said no injuries were reported during the incident. But the investigation continues as to what led to the shooting.
“The suspect is claiming self-defense, stating that the victim fired shots at him,” Gann said. “But no one called 911 or reported the incident to us as we began our investigation. When I went to the house to question another falsely accused party, all the passengers in that car were there and didn’t tell me anything. More charges could come from this incident as we continue our investigation.”
