Dr. William Puffer Thompson considered the direction of his highly successful life to have been directed by God.
Serious illness and a farm injury showed him the value of a dedicated physician at an early age. Once he became a doctor, it at first seemed to him that he couldn’t get the right doors to open for him on his career path. That path ended up leading him back home to Yazoo County.
That turned out to be exactly where he was meant to be, and there’s no way he could have had any idea what it would mean to this community.
It is impossible to overstate what Dr. Thompson meant to Yazoo. He was a competent and compassionate doctor for many years. He was always encouraging, and it was clear that he truly cared for the patients he served.
Thompson’s medical career was enough to make him a giant in this community, but he gave much more. He was active in his church, and in the community.
Some of our favorite memories of Dr. Thompson were watching him smile as he listened to the music at the Bentonia Blues Festival or sharing a high five with him in celebration of a Manchester Academy touchdown on the sidelines of a football game.
Dr. Thompson could have easily made more money in a bigger city and he likely would have enjoyed a lighter workload as well, but he spent his life serving Yazoo because he loved it here.
Most importantly, he loved the people here. He proved it every single day of his life.
We loved him too, and we’re sure going to miss him.
Dr. Thompson was never shy about speaking of his faith in Jesus Christ so we take great comfort in knowing that he is now in the hands of the Great Physician, and we look forward to the day when we will see him again.
