Lela Karen Bridges Tyer transitioned to Jesus on January 10, 2021 at St. Dominic’s Hospital due to complications of a massive stroke. Graveside services will be held at Central Holmes Cemetery in Little Yazoo on Thursday at 11am under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home. Please wear a face mask and respect social distancing guidelines.
Karen ( Kay-ren) was born on August 19, 1957 in Rolling Fork, MS to Delma and Mary Ann Bridges. She grew up in Bentonia and attended Benton Academy where lifelong friendships were made. Her only child, Lt. Colonel Howard Vandevere, was her pride and joy. As nieces and nephews entered her life she became known as “KK” to many family and friends. Arguments ensue over each one claiming “they are her favorite “. She adored being called KK by her three grandchildren and she never missed an opportunity to show them how much she loved them. Her newest gift from God is a great-grandson who she finally got to meet only two days prior to her stroke. God blessed KK in 2001 with a soulmate, Chuck Tyer and a daughter Collyne, and he chose to call her “Lela”, a name she loved because it was her mamaw’s name. KK and Chuck honored God daily and loved to study their bible together. KK loved her feline fur babies and rescued many to become her baby.
Karen is survived by her husband, Chuck Tyer of Bentonia, son, Lt. Col. Howard Vandevere and wife Jamie of San Antonio, TX and step-daughter Collyne Tyer of Pensacola, FL. Grandchildren Tanner Vandevere (Jordan) and Banks of Spring, Tx, Palmer and Reese Vandevere of San Antonio, TX. Her siblings include Andy Bridges (Sheila) of Yazoo City, Donna Johnson (Mike), Marsha Burton (Jeff) and Tim Bridges all of Bentonia. Nieces and nephews include Del Bridges, Kale Johnson (Erin), Khara Horn (Dan), Cameron Brown (Ron), Will Bridges (Kristen) Tiffany Bridges, Mallory Davis (Wade); Laura Hines (Matt), April, Ross Bridges and fourteen great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and nephews Blake & Chandler Burton.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone extending their love during her brief illness.
