Like all meetings between rivals, when Yazoo City and Yazoo County meet up on any athletic field or court, the excitement will always be at an all-time high.
This past Saturday didn’t disappoint the packed house at Yazoo County as the two rivals squared off.
The Lady Panthers opened things with a dismantling of the Lady Indians, 41-20, but the Indians returned the favor in the nightcap taking a 54-21 win.
The Lady Panthers wasted little time getting going, racing out to a 12-1 first quarter advantage. After an 8-2 second period, YCHS led 20-3.
The Lady Panthers continued to pour it on in the second half outscoring Yazoo City 21-17 over the final two quarters to take the win.
Clemmie Carr and Khalee Harrison led Yazoo County with eight points followed by Jakayla Washington with seven, Shakeria Robinson and Kamillia Jones with five apiece, Aah’niya Smith with four and London Love and Mary Jones with two apiece.
Jaya Gallion and E’kemi Johnson led the Lady Indians with six points apiece.
Talasia Green chipped in with five, A’kayla Hudson had two and Shanya Arrington had one.
The Indians executed the perfect alley-oop to Jacquarrius Collum for a dunk that ignited the Indiand crowd and set the tone for the rest of the game.
YHS raced out to an 8-0 run and ended the first quarter with a 16-4 lead.
They tacked on 15 more second quarter points while holding the Panthers to just three and held a commanding 31-7 halftime lead.
Collum led all scorers with 17 points followed by Will Grayson with 14, Tamarion Hoover with six, Damarion Winston, Jacquaris Rogers and Davionne Bouldin with four apiece, L.T. Brown and Markeisco Collins with two apiece and Chris Burnett with one.
Panthers scorers were Malachi Morton with 11, Donavin Green with four and Cameron Williams, Matthew Swan and Kaleb Washington with two apiece.
Round two of the series is set for this Friday at Yazoo City.
