Despite some criticism surrounding the city-wide COVID restrictions, Mayor Diane Delaware it would be unsafe to open the city with the community’s low vaccination rate and the different variant cases.
“The Delta variant is critical,” she said, during the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. “The unvaccinated rate for the state of Mississippi is the lowest vaccination rate in the United States of America. We don’t have to be the lowest in everything. I wish I could be able to inspire but I haven’t. I hope the public can inspire…to realize that not being vaccinated is not good.”
The city aldermen also encouraged the public to get vaccinated.
“It would be very beneficial to the city so that we could go back to our normal lives,” Lloyd said.
Delaware said the majority of the city and county population has several health issues, ranging from diabetes to heart disease to high blood pressure.
“COVID still exists,” she continued.
The city council continues its extension of COVID restrictions within Yazoo City. However, an amendment was included during this week’s meeting to allow event centers to open with a 50 percent capacity rate and to follow CDC and state health guidelines.
