James Lewis Vickers, Sr., 81, of Eden passed away on July 16, 2021, at home surrounded by family.
Just out of high school, James worked for The Coca Cola Bottling Works for 7 years. He went on to become the farm manager for Equen Plantation. From there, he followed his father’s footsteps and became a master carpenter making custom woodwork, cabinetry & furniture before joining Yazoo County Schools where he retired in 2002 after completing 17 years of service. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, cooking, gardening and spending time outdoors. He was a jack of all trades and loved to share his knowledge with those around him, but to anyone who knew him it was clear that his family brought him his greatest joy and deepest sense of pride.
In 1973, James moved his family to Eden, MS where he was a member of Eden Baptist Church for many years.
James was a member of the 31st Dixie Division, Army National Guard from 1957-1965.
James was preceded in death by his parents Joe Henry Vickers and Ruby Lee Aldridge, brother Sam Hilliard Vickers and sister Josephine Gullett.
James is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Shirley, four children: Debbie (Kevin) Rhodes, Cindy (Fred) Wallace, Jimmy (Karen) Vickers and Carolyn (Joey) Stevens, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Stricklin King Funeral Home in Yazoo City, Monday July 19th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at The Church at Shiloh Cemetery at 2394 Shiloh Road, Pelahatchie, MS on Tuesday, July 20th at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Joey Bennett officiating.
Serving as pallbearers are; Brian Rhodes, Patrick Rhodes, Chris Shelton, James L. Vickers, III and Cooper Stevens.
