Celebrating Arbor Day
Arbor Day, February 8, 2019, was celebrated with Lintonia Garden Club members planting a Red Crape Myrtle near the Pavilion at the Martha Coker Green Houses. (The temperature was low 30 degrees.)
After the planting, Marietta Wilkinson shared the history of Arbor Day. The first Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872. It was not until 1926 in Mississippi that Arbor Day became an official day of observance. The second Friday in February was adopted as the day Mississippi could annually observe the day.
Lintonia Garden Club is affiliated with National Garden Clubs, Inc., Deep South Region, The Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., and River Road District. Members who helped with the planting were: Ruby Gilliam, Peggy Saxton, Elouise Upchurch, Marietta Wilkinson, Lyndell Williams, and Marjorie Williams. Wiley Saxton helped dig the hole for the tree.
