Last week was bittersweet for many Yazooans as we gathered to wish Colon and Brenda Johnston the best in retirement.
The sweet part was easy. No one deserves a break more than Colon and Brenda. They’ve worked hard for many years and kept going strong long after many of their peers slowed down.
The bitter part was knowing that we will miss them (although we’re sure they’ll still be around) and also realizing that they will leave some tremendous shoes to fill in this community.
Colon and Brenda built their Power 107 radio station from the ground up in Yazoo City and used it to keep the community informed and promote positive community events. They have aired the Mayor and Board of Aldermen meetings for years and have done live broadcasts for many important community events, including political debates that they helped plan.
For many years the couple has been involved in numerous civic activities. They were founders of the Jerry Clower Festival in Yazoo City and kept it going strong for over a decade. Anytime someone was planning something positive for the community there was a good chance you would see Colon or Brenda there.
We’ve had the opportunity to work with them many times, and we always admired their positive attitude and strong work ethic. It’s hard for many people much younger than Colon and Brenda to keep up with them when they take on a project.
We’re grateful for all the memories we’ve made with Colon and Brenda Johnston over the years, and we hope they embrace retirement with the same enthusiasm that they had for their careers and community service.
Enjoy your retirement Colon and Brenda. You have truly earned it.
