Yazoo County was among most communities within the state on Dec. 28 to be affected from a destructive storm system that spanned multiple states.
The system traveled through the state with the National Weather Service confirming 27 tornadoes in Mississippi on Dec. 28. As of press time, the NWS has not confirmed a tornado touchdown in Yazoo County.
Jack Willingham, county emergency management director, said 10 homes were reported as damaged in Yazoo County with one home completely destroyed in the Vaughan area. He added that no injuries were reported.
Willingham said there was also an estimated $600,000 worth of damage to public utilities, which has been reported to the state. He also added that he declared a state of emergency from the Dec. 28 system to request possible assistance.
As of press time, two fatalities were reported from outside counties following the storm system, including Tykeria Rogers, 18, of Natchez, after a tree reportedly fell on a home in Adams County. It was also reported that Geneva Karr, 68, also died in Lowndes County after losing home oxygen because of a power outage.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency also reported injuries in Adams, Franklin, Simpson and Wayne counties.
Another round of severe weather affected most of the state last Sunday with 11 counties reporting damage as of press time. Carroll, Hinds, Jasper, Jefferson Davis, Leake, Madison, Monroe, Noxubee, Rankin, Smith and Winston counties reported damage, according to MEMA. The state agency expects to receive more damage reports in the coming days.
Locally, about 540 outages were reported by Yazoo Valley Electric Power Association. Those outages were restored within the night of the Jan. 5 storms.
The National Weather Service is currently surveying storm damage across the state.
