A suspect is charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault after allegedly firing shots at a large crowd that also included a local police officer.
Demetri Taylor was charged with ten counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault upon a law enforcement officer.
Police Chief Terry Gann said no injuries were reported during the shooting, adding that the suspect stated that he “was just drunk.”
“We first received a call on Saturday about 6 p.m. about shots being fired on near Lamar and Seventh Street,” Gann said. “Sgt. Artis Harris arrived at the scene and noticed a large group of people near Seventh Street. He stopped to speak to the group to investigate what they could have seen in the area.”
During the officer’s conversation with the group, Gann said a dark gray Nissan Altima appeared in the area.
“Shots were then fired upon the crowd,” Gann said. “The officer returned fire, as well. Fortunately, there were no injuries.”
Gann said Taylor was later taken into custody.
“Again, this was an incident where alcohol played a factor,” Gann said. “The suspect admitted to us that he had been drinking and that he was just drunk. But we continued to investigate this matter to uncover a motive.”
