A suspect was charged with attempted murder in connection to a Yazoo City shooting earlier this month. And Chief Terry Gann said his department will be pursuing the upgraded charge more to deter crime within the local community.
“In dealing with these shootings, we are going to stop simply charging suspects with aggravated assault,” Gann said. “We will be upgrading the charges to attempted murder in an effort to deter anybody from doing these crimes, knowing that it will have a tougher sentence.”
Anthony Russell, 22, was charged with attempted murder last Wednesday in connection to a shooting on Monroe Street, near Ward Street, that occurred on July 20.
“The suspect and the victim have a history of confrontation,” Gann said. “The suspect was standing in front of his house when the victim drove by. The suspect claims he saw a weapon in the vehicle and opened fire upon the vehicle.”
Gann said the victim was struck by gunfire through his arm and was the only injury reported at the scene.
