The Panthers and Lady Panthers were both unable to pull out a win during the regular season against the explosive Humphreys County High School basketball teams.
A strong third quarter could not pull the Panthers out of an early hole in their 61-51 loss to Humphreys County on Tuesday night.
The Cowboys jumped out to an 18-14 lead in the first quarter of Tuesday night’s game, and they were able to increase their lead by outscoring the Panthers 13-7 in the second quarter, giving them a 31-21 lead at the half.
The Panthers finally hit their stride in the third quarter, and their newfound momentum led to a 19-point scoring effort and a 14-point defensive effort, cutting the lead to 45-40.
There were opportunities for Yazoo County to cut the lead further, but they were unable to do so.
Humphreys pulled away further with a 16-11 performance in the fourth quarter, bringing the final score to 61-51.
A fourth quarter collapse allowed the Cowgirls to pull away from the Lady Panthers in Tuesday night’s rematch for a 54-30 win.
The Lady Panthers started the game well enough, outscoring Humphreys County 11-6 to gain an early advantage.
Humphreys County, however, could not be contained for long. The bounced back in the second quarter to put up 12 points to Yazoo County’s eight points, cutting the lead to 19-18 at the half.
The momentum for the Cowgirls increased after the half, and they quickly took the lead by outscoring the Lady Panthers 18-11, making it a 36-30 game with a quarter remaining.
In the fourth quarter, absolutely nothing went Yazoo County’s way.
They could not score, nor could they stop the Cowgirls.
Yazoo County was outscored 18-0, bringing the final score to 54-30.
Jordan Scott led the Lady Panthers with six points in the defeat.
Ke’Anna Norwood, Aquasia Edwards, and Destiny Edwards all had five points in the losing effort.
Yazoo County’s basketball teams will attempt to turn it around on Friday night when they host Charleston in the regular season finale.
Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
