Yazoo County’s Lady Panthers defeated rival Yazoo City 47-24 on November 30 to give them the series sweep for the year.
But although the final score was reminiscent of the first game, the course of the game was not.
The Lady Indians battled valiantly in the first half of the contest and made the Lady Panthers fight for every point.
After one quarter of action, the Lady Panthers still held a 9-6 lead.
In the second quarter of play, the scoring dropped even more, as each team put more and more pressure on the other defensively. The result was a 7-4 quarter in favor of the Lady Panthers.
At the half, Yazoo County led Yazoo City 16-10.
The Lady Panthers came out in the third quarter with more of the same, stifling defense that turned into turnovers and layups. They put up 11 points to Yazoo City’s seven, making it a 27-17 game with a quarter left to play.
The wheels fell off for the Lady Indians in the final quarter. They fought as hard as they could, but the Lady Panthers had too much firepower, as they outscored the Lady Indians 20-7 to bring the final score to 47-24.
Aquasia Edwards led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 11 points in the victory.
Shamyia Douglas and Akeriunna Frierson each chipped in nine points to the winning effort.
Jordan Scott and Ke’Anna Norwood rounded things out with six points each in the series-clinching win.
The Lady Panthers followed their win over Yazoo City by dropping a 49-30 game to Gentry High School.
It began as a heated battle with neither team willing to concede goals, but the Lady Rams edged out the Lady Panthers 10-9 as the buzzer went off for the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was the same story, only this time the Lady Rams won 9-8 to make it a 19-17 game at the half.
A disastrous third quarter spelled doom for the Lady Panthers.
Everything that could have gone wrong for Patrick Nutter’s team did, as Gentry outscored Yazoo County 24-7 to take a commanding 43-24 with only a quarter left to play.
The final quarter was an evenly fought game with each team scoring six points to bring the final score to 49-30.
Ke’Anna Norwood led the Lady Panthers with nine points in the defeat.
Aquasia Edwards put up five points in the losing effort.
Chloe Edwards and Akeriunna Frierson each contributed four points in the loss.
Next up for the Lady Panthers is a road trip to face South Delta on Tuesday night.
Tip-off for the contest is set for 6 p.m.
