The Yazoo County Panthers continued their winning ways as the calendar hit 2019 with a 77-45 victory over district foe Ruleville this past Friday night. The win upped the Panthers’ record to 17-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Yazoo County closed out 2018 with wins over West Jones, Brandon and Hattiesburg to take the championship of the Hattiesburg Coca-Cola Holiday Shootout and didn’t miss a beat with the visiting Tigers coming to town.
The game remained close through the first quarter of play as Yazoo County led just 13-10. The Panthers, however, began to create some space between themselves and the Tigers as the second quarter began, outscoring the visitors 21-10 in the second frame to take a commanding 34-20 lead at halftime.
Yazoo County continued to add to their lead after the intermission, posting a 17-14 third quarter and they would close out the game with a 26-11 fourth quarter to seal the win.
YCHS forward Emon Washington led all scorers with a game-high 29 points in win. He was followed in double figures by LaKevion Dixon and Kejuan Frierson with 12 points apiece, and Hunter Barron with 10.
Also scoring for Yazoo County was Kim Brown with six, and Martarious Burrell and John Lewis with four apiece. The Panthers return to action Saturday at home against Humphreys County, travel to J.Z. George on January 15 and host Charleston on January 18.
