The Yazoo City Indians and Lady Indians split a recent pair of district games against the visiting Cleveland Wildcats and Lady Wildcats. The Indians were victorious by a score of 76-56 while the Lady Indians lost by a score of 50-38.
Indians 76, Wildcats 56
Junior point guard Leslie Nelson led a quartet of scorers with a game-high 23 points in the Indians 20-point win. Yazoo City opened the game with a 13-8 first quarter. Senior guard Roosevelt Johnson got hot from behind the three-point arc in the second quarter, nailing two deep shots that helped the Indians outscore the Wildcats 22-16 in the quarter en route to a 35-24 halftime lead.
The Indians continued to pour it on in second half sparked by the defensive play of Nelson and Davari Truman. The duo, responsible for six steals in the frame, scored on multiple layups midway through the quarter, fueling a 14-5 run which led to a 49-29 lead at the 3:47 mark of the third quarter.
The Wildcats made a run late in the game, scoring 22 fourth quarter points, but the Indians posted 24 points of their own to seal the win.
Following Nelson in scoring was Truman with 12, and Johnson and Chavis Banks with 10 apiece. Other scorers were Parviz King with eight, Tommy Washington with five, F.J. Lewis with four, and Darius Sibley and Dennis Starling with two points apiece.
Lady Indians 38, Lady Wildcats 50
The Lady Indians and Lady Wildcats played to a near-even tie in the first quarter of action as the Lady wildcats scored 13 points to the Lady Indians’ 11. Yazoo City surged ahead slightly in the second quarter after posting a 10-7 quarter to take a one-point 21-20 lead at the half.
Cleveland, however, turned up the heat in the third quarter, outscoring the home team 18-4 to take a 38-25 lead at the end of three quarters. The Lady Indians outscored Cleveland 13-10 in the final frame, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Gabriella Campbell was the only Lady Indian to reach double figures in the contest with 12 points. Destiny Henderson followed with eight, Tykelia Green added six, Nyla Henderson had five, LaNisha Richardson had three and Kalyn Young and LyNell Campbell rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.
The Indians and Lady Indians returned to action Friday night in a home district contest with Greenwood and will travel to Cleveland on Saturday.
