Yazoo City High School’s halftime lead was lost on their way to a 36-29 loss to South Delta on Friday night.
The loss dropped Yazoo City High’s overall record to 0-6 as they head to conference play.
Yazoo City High head football coach Lynn Lang believes injuries have put his team in the precarious situation of having to rely on inexperienced underclassmen to make vital plays.
“We played a really good South Delta team,” Lang said. “Injuries to our linebacking corp have us depleted. We’re counting on young guys to make plays. They have to step up and make those plays.”
Early on in the contest, it seemed like Yazoo City may break their losing streak that stretches back to last season.
Behind the running of freshman running back Cameron Sneed, the Indians led South Delta 15-14 at the half.
In the second half, however, things began to go South Delta’s way.
They began to finish drives and eventually took the game 36-29.
“They went for it on 4th-and-long multiple times and got it,” Lang said. “That cannot happen. We have to have guys step up and make plays. We lost probably 99% of our tackles from a year ago. Losing Rod’tavious (Jefferson) from last year and Sam Barton to injury this year hurts. We need guys to grow up.”
Cameron Sneed rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries and caught another touchdown to lead Yazoo City offensively.
Lang is excited about his freshman running back’s demeanor and play.
“Cameron is a ninth grader, and he gives us energy,” Lang said. “I love high energy guys, and he is a high energy guy. I love seeing kids out there that want to be out there.”
Kory Price went 8-for-17 for 124 yards and one touchdown.
On the defensive side, Talyn McCalster led the way with a whopping 17 tackles.
Jordan Cole had 12 tackles, while Javarious Grady had 10 tackles in the loss.
Roncedrick Weekly returned a fumble 95 yards for one touchdown and rushed another touchdown in.
Yazoo City will try to halt their skid on Friday night when they travel to Greenwood to face the Bulldogs in the opening round of conference play.
Greenwood is 2-3 on the year after defeating Amanda Elzy 38-14 on Friday night.
Kickoff in Greenwood is set for 7 p.m.
