The Yazoo County Panthers will enter their open weekend with a perfect 5-0 record after hammering Raymond 61-0 on Homecoming Friday night.
After fumbling on their first two possessions, the Panthers picked up some momentum and outscored Raymond 28-0 in the first half.
In the second half, things got no easier for Raymond.
Yazoo County moved the ball virtually at will and stifled anything the opposition could muster. The Panthers ended up victorious by a score of 61-0.
Some teams struggle to play on Homecoming because of the mass amount of extracurricular activities occurring the week of the game, but Yazoo County head football coach Robert Dobbs felt his squad combated that well.
“Homecoming is really special for our seniors,” Dobbs said. “They put a lot of effort into it. Homecoming does come with a certain set of challenges, though. It’s a hectic week. It’s hard for them to remain focused when there is so much stuff going on off of the field. I think our kids did a great job of overcoming that.”
He feels that his team was able to clean up some early mistakes and play some dominating football down the stretch.
“The kids played extremely hard from start to finish,” Dobbs said. “We dominated the game in the trenches on both sides of the ball. We actually got off to a slow start offensively. We had two turnovers early in the game, but we picked it up in the second half finished the game right.”
Next up for the Panthers is a much needed break before the rigors of conference play heats up.
Dobbs will do his best to ensure that his team will be happy and healthy for the battles to come.
“We’ll open division next week against Humphreys County,” Dobbs said. “We’ll use to bye week to help recover from the games we’ve already played. We’ll practice a few days and take a few days off. Our practices will be shorter than normal, and we’ll focus on fundamentals. The most important thing we’ll be doing is getting our bodies right for the rest of the season.”
Yazoo County will return to action on September 29.
