Yazoo County chalked up a fourth straight win Friday using a familiar formula: a smothering defense paired with an explosive offense.
The Panthers only needed three quarters to score five touchdowns, and the defense , led by junior outside linebacker Kendarian Dixon with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, did not allow any points.
The contest began as a defensive battle as Vashun Demus tackled the Falcons punter who was forced to run after a bad snap, but Velma Jackson held on and forced the Panthers to punt.
It didn’t take long for quarterback Kenneth Gainwell to find some weaknesses in the Falcons defense, however.
Gainwell broke loose on a 52-yard run for first and goal and followed up with a 1-yard touchdown.
Jamie Ortiz tacked on the extra point kick for a 7-0 lead with 2:47 to go in the first quarter.
Velma Jackson later responded with a deep pass to set up first and goal early in the second quarter, but the Panthers defense recovered a fumble on the three yard line to ruin any hopes of evening the score.
Devarrio Sanders capitalized on the big turnover with a pair of first down runs to bring the ball to midfield. Gainwell and Ewards added three more first down runs for five straight first downs.
Gainwell capped the impressive drive with a 7-yard touchdown, and Ortiz added the extra point for a 14-0 lead.
Jesse Henderson recovered a fumble on the following drive to bring the Panthers offense back on the field.
Sanders and Gainwell started things off with two first down carries, and Gainwell scored his third touchdown of the night on a 3-yard keeper to bring the score to 20-0 with 5:05 to go before halftime.
Gainwell added his fourth touchdown on a 48-yard carry in the third quarter for a 27-0 lead with 10:42 remaining in the third quarter.
Edwards scored the final touchdown of the night on a 3-yard carry, and Ortiz added the PAT kick for a 34-0 lead.
The Panthers defense continued to keep the Falcons out of the endzone throughout the fourth quarter.
Gainwell finished the night with 18 carries for 197 yards and four touchdowns. Sanders added 13 carries 133 yards, and Cherokee Edwards added 10 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown.
On defense Tredarius Carr had five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.
