Yazoo County’s Panthers and Lady Panthers each earned non-conference wins over Leflore County on Tuesday night.
The Panthers earned their first win of the season when they defeated Leflore County 67-55.
For Yazoo County head coach Phil Turner, it was nice to get revenge from a year ago without having to have their best performance
“It was cool to get a win,” Turner said. “We play decently. Our guys played hard. They beat us pretty good last year, so it was nice to get a win over them this year.”
Still, Turner wants to see more from his team, and he feels they want to see more from themselves.
“Based on where we were last year to where I see us going and what our guys’ expectations are, we didn’t meet our expectations,” Turner said. “I know we can play better, and I think we will get there.”
On the women’s side of things, the Lady Panthers made it a 2-0 start to the season after dropping Leflore County 47-39.
Despite the impressive final score, however, the Lady Panthers allowed Leflore to make a comeback of sorts after an utterly dominating first half, showing shades of their flaws from a year ago.
The Lady Panthers came out firing on all cylinders on both offense and defense in the first quarter with a 12-2 effort.
The second quarter proved to be no better for Lady Tigers, as they were outscored 13-4.
At the half, Yazoo County led Leflore County 25-6.
That’s when the slippage commenced.
The Lady Tigers fought back in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Panthers 14-6 to cut the lead to 31-20.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers kept up their newfound momentum, putting up 19 points to the Lady Panthers’ 16 points.
But that was not enough.
Yazoo County moved to 2-0 after being named victorious in the 47-39.
The Panthers and Lady Panthers hope to keep this momentum rolling on Tuesday when they travel to face South Delta.
The first game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
