Yazoo County High School won their conference-opener 45-0 against Amanda Elzy on Friday night.
The win brought the Panthers’ record to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the district.
Yazoo County head football coach Robert Dobbs was please to go ahead and get their first district win.
“I’m glad that we got our first district win out of the way,” Dobbs said. “We came out and played to the best of our abilities, and it showed in the final score. The goal is to win every district game, but we’re still taking it one game at a time. That’s been our approach all year.”
Despite the blowout win, it was only a 14-0 game at the half.
Yazoo County put up 17 points in the third quarter to make it 31-0 heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, the Panthers put the finishing touches on their win with 14 points to make it 45-0.
The Panthers rushed for 241 yards and four touchdowns on the ground thanks to a strong showing by both backs and the offensive line.
Senior center LeAndrius Sampson led the charge on the line for Yazoo County. He graded out at 89%, allowed no sacks or quarterback hits and had eight pancake blocks.
Keilos Swinney had a big day rushing for Yazoo County with 84 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries.
Swinney also went 6-for-16 passing for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Cherokee Edwards rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown on five rushing attempts.
Keilos Swinney caught a 57-yard touchdown pass.
Devarrio Sanders returned a kickoff for a touchdown to go with his 59 rushing yards.
Curtis Bullock had a huge defensive game in the blowout. He accumulated nine total tackles, five of which were for loss, three blocked punts, two sacks and a safety.
Yazoo County will try and make it 2-0 in the conference on Friday night when they host Ruleville Central for their Homecoming game.
Ruleville Central (4-3 overall, 1-0 in conference) defeated Humphreys County 34-12 to earn their first conference win on Friday night.
Dobbs hopes to keep his team focused during the hectic Homecoming week.
“Kids are a little more relaxed during Homecoming,” Dobbs said. “I’ve been telling them that they have to be focused. I want them to have fun, but we also have a job to do on Friday night. If we win, we can celebrate Homecoming and really enjoy ourselves.”
Kickoff between Yazoo County and Ruleville Central is set for 7 p.m.
