Yazoo City High’s football team fell to 0-7 on the year after losing 39-14 to Greenwood High School in their conference-opener.
The losing streak has reached 11 games for the Indians dating back to last season.
The most unfortunate part of the loss is that Yazoo City High head football coach Lynn Lang thought the Indians could have won if it had not been for a few mental mistakes.
“We played well enough to win, but we made a lot of mistakes,” Lang said. “We got the ball first and drove the ball for 7-8 minutes. We got all the way down to the 1-yard line. That’s when we started losing yards. We tried a field goal, but they blocked it returned it to the 40. It’s little things like that. On a 4th down, they faked a punt and got it. We made a lot of mental mistakes and turnovers.”
The blocked field goal by Greenwood led to their first touchdown and following 2-point conversion, which gave them an 8-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Bulldogs came back and outscored Yazoo City 13-6 to take a 21-6 lead into the half.
After the break, Greenwood came out and picked up where they left off, scoring 12 points to Yazoo City’s 0, making it a 33-6 game
In the final quarter, Yazoo City finally got the upper hand by outscoring the Bulldogs 8-6, but it was not enough.
Greenwood won 39-14.
Despite the loss, Yazoo City had some players make plays.
Freshman Cameron Sneed rushed for a team-high 69 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Senior Jared Waters rushed for 65 yards on six carries.
Malik Clark rushed nine times for 21 yards and a score.
One thing that Lang wants to make sure to do more is put the ball in some of his more electric players’ hands.
“We’ve got to be more committed,” Lang said. “We have to be more committed to putting the ball in our playmakers’ hands. With as young of a team as we have, we have to put them in the right positions and correct the mental mistakes.”
Talyn McCalster once again led the Indians in tackles with 10 in the loss.
Jordan Cole had nine total tackles, one of which was for loss, to go with a blocked field goal.
DeBreko Davis had eight tackles, two of which were for loss.
Javarious Grady had seven total tackles, one of which was for loss, to go with a sack.
Rorecoss Willis, Kory Price and Brannen Jones each had an interception.
The Indians will attempt to break their streak on Friday night when they host Cleveland High School.
Cleveland High School is 2-4 on the season after falling 32-30 to cross-town East Side this past Friday night.
According to Lang, the Indians should be able to move the ball if they can get their defense off the field.
“Cleveland’s offense is a Wing T offense,” Lang said. “They’re a call control offense. They may run the same play 10 times. If they can get five yards on first down, they will keep at it and keep at it. They run a 3-4 defense, and I think we can move the ball on them. We have to get our defense off the field.”
Kickoff between the Indians and Wildcats is set for 7 p.m.
