Yazoo County’s Lady Panthers took their first loss of the season on Monday night when they fell 15-11 to Pelahatchie.
The loss dropped Yazoo County’s record to 5-1.
Things started off well enough for the Lady Panthers.
A single by Alex Carter eventually turned into a score thanks to a passed ball, making it 1-0 in favor of the Lady Panthers.
In the top of the third inning, Pelahatchie put some hits together and took a 3-1 lead.
The Lady Panthers stormed back in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own thanks to hits by Destiny Epps, Alex Carter, Marlana Taylor, Hope Warrington. Yazoo County led 5-3 heading into the fourth inning.
Pelahatchie responded with three runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead in the contest.
Yazoo County pieced together some hits to take an 8-6 lead, but Pelahatchie tied things up at 8-8 in the top of the fifth inning.
The Lady Panthers were able to score three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give them an 11-8 lead.
Things took a turn for the worst for Yazoo County in the top of the seventh inning.
A walk by Erica Carson loaded the bases and set up an inning in which Pelahatchie scored seven runs to take a commanding 15-11 lead.
That was a lead they would not lose, ending Yazoo County’s winning streak.
According to Yazoo County softball coach Grant Andrews, many of the wounds that they felt were self-inflicted.
“The difference in the game was pitching,” Andrews said. “We walked five batters, and their pitcher didn’t have any walks. If we cut out the walks and errors in the game, the outcome is probably different.”
Despite the walks and errors, Andrews was proud of how his team fought against such a talented pitcher.
“I am proud of how our girls played and hit,” Andrews said. “They had a pitcher that threw about 60 mph, and we put the ball in play to give ourselves a chance to win. That says a lot about our team, especially after being off a week for Spring Break.”
The Lady Panthers will get another shot at Pelahatchie when they go on the road for a rematch on Thursday.
On Friday, the Lady Panthers will host Raymond.
The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
