The Yazoo City Lady Indians picked up their first win of the season last Tuesday with a 48-16 drubbing of the visiting South Delta Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Indians are now 1-5 on the year.
Senior forward Gabriella Campbell continued to fuel the Lady Indian scoring attack and wasted little time getting started against the Lady Bulldogs. Campbell scored six first quarter points to South Delta’s five as the game started off at a snail’s pace.
Yazoo City picked it up a notch in the second quarter led by the play of reserve guards Vinaua Gates and Makayla Williams. Both guards came off the bench and ignited the Lady Indians with their aggressive defense and intensity. The Lady Indians opened the second quarter with a 13-4 run that pushed their lead to ten, 19-9, with 3:35 remaining in the frame. By the end of the period Yazoo City held a commanding 23-11 lead heading into the intermission.
The Lady Indians almost held South Delta scoreless in the third period, outscoring them 18-2 to take a 41-13 lead into the fourth quarter. Yazoo City posted a 7-3 final frame to seal the 32-point win.
Campbell and Gates led the way scoring for the Lady Indians with 15 and 11 points respectively. Other scorers were Williams and Makyra Foreman with six apiece, Rakayla Rankin with three, Destiny Henderson, Nyla Henderson and Kalyn Young with two apiece and Tykelia Green with one.
The Lady Indians began a 7-game road stretch Thursday night with a rematch at rival Yazoo County. They play in the Winona Shootout on December 2-3 and visit the Greenwood Lady Bulldogs on December 6.
