The Yazoo City Lady Indians softball team will host the playoff at Campanella Field Thursday after sweeping a double-header with Rosa Fort of Tunica Monday.
The Lady Indians, under the leadership of Coach Stacey Leach and Coach Ravaria Jennings, easily defeated the Lady Lions 23-0 in Monday’s opener. The second game was delayed by rain, but Yazoo City returned to the field to secure a 19-2 victory.
Yazoo City completes the regular season with a 6-2 record, falling only to No. 1-ranked Cleveland. The Lady Indians secured the No. 2 spot in the district this week, which gives them home field advantage in the playoffs. The schedule and matchups had not been finalized by press time, but the games will be played Thursday at Roy Campanella Field in Yazoo City.
Last Wednesday the Lady Indians defeated Greenwood 18-2 in a district matchup.
Jasmine Sims, a seventh grade pitcher, did an “excellent job” according to Coach Leach. Leach further noted that Sims accomplished four strikeouts in the team’s previous game against Gentry.
Sims is also a strong hitter with a batting average just under .300.
Cree Williams, a tenth grade pitcher, has proven to be an excellent role model for young Sims. Williams also began pitching at the middle school level. Coach Leach noted that Williams is one of the most watched pitchers in the district.
Her batting average of .328 is well above average.
