The Yazoo City Lady Indians returned to action this week when they hosted district rival Greenwood Tuesday night. While the Lady Indians played inspired basketball in spurts their efforts were not enough as they dropped a 64-36 decision.
Through one quarter of play it seemed as though the Lady Indians chances of winning their first district game was likely as they battled tooth and nail with the Lady Bulldogs and trailed by five, 16-11, at the end of the frame. The Lady Bulldogs, however, turned up the defensive intensity in the second quarter and began to force turnovers from the inexperienced Lady Indian squad. After a pair of baskets from Lady Indian center Janyla Brown pulled Yazoo City to within one, 18-17, at the 5:34 mark of the second quarter, Greenwood scored 19 unanswered points to pull ahead 37-17 at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs continued scoring at a high rate in the third quarter, outscoring Yazoo City 20-9 in the frame to take a commanding 57-26 lead into the final quarter. The Lady Indians, however, fought all the way to the end, going on a 10-2 run to close out the game sparked by senior guard Vinaua Gates.
Freshman center Lynell Campbell led the Lady Indians with 9 points, followed by Brown with eight, Gates with seven, and Makayla White with five. Scoring two points apiece were Danasia Lewis, Rakayla Rankin and Makyra Foreman. Brown led the Lady Indians with a game-high 10 rebounds and had a blocked shot. Campbell had three rebounds and two blocks, Lewis had four rebounds and Gates had two rebounds to go along with four steals.
Yazoo City (2-16 overall, 0-4 district) hosted conference foe Clarksdale Friday night, travels to Clarksdale on February 2 and plays at Gentry on February 3.
