With a 51-32 victory over the Rosa Fort Lions, the Yazoo City Indians improved to 5-12 overall and 1-1 in district action. The victory marked the second win in a row for the Indians, winners of three of their last four games. The streak, while small, is a welcome surprise to YHS head coach Anthony Carlyle.
“It’s always good to get a district win especially on the road,” said Carlyle. “I thought the guys stuck with the gameplan and executed it well. I feel better because guys are beginning to understand their roles and what we need to do as a team in order to give us the best chance to win. Winning two in a row and three of our last four is big for confidence with a young team. Even in our last few losses we competed well and had opportunities to win, but fell short. We will just continue to use these games to gain experience with the playoffs starting in about five weeks.”
The Indians led from start to finish against the Lions, outscoring them 15-6 in the first quarter. The home team scored 11 points in the second quarter, but allowed the visiting Indians to post 13 points of their own to take a 28-17 halftime lead.
The third quarter proved to be the best quarter and the closest of the game for Rosa Fort as the Indians outscored them by one, 13-12. Yazoo City, however, closed out the game with a 10-3 fourth quarter to seal the win.
Leading the way for the Indians was junior guard Percy Green with a double-double (17 points and 10 rebounds). Jacquarrius Collum was the only other Indian to notch double figures with 12 points. Other Yazoo City scorers included William Grayson and Jaquaris Rogers with five points apiece and F.J. Lewis, Jeffrey Lee and Daon Henry each with four points.
Yazoo City hosted district foe Greenwood Tuesday night and travels to Gentry on Friday.
