While school is out for the summer, Jesse Henderson’s work on the track is just heating up.
At the Southern Association Junior Olympics Championship in McComb over the weekend, Henderson broke the 110 meter hurdles meet record with a time of 14.48 in the semifinals before taking the title in the finals with a time of 14.58.
Henderson also placed second in the triple jump and high jump, and he placed third in the long jump.
After the high school season came to a completion at the conclusion of the academic year, Henderson sought out a way to improve at a rapid pace during the “off-season.”
What he found was Peak Performance under the leadership of Coach Dennis Groll, a Madison Central-based team.
And he found it at the last possible second.
“They had one more day of registration when I found out about them, and I went that day with my money and everything,” Henderson said. “I started working with them three weeks ago, and I can already see the differences in my running.”
To reach new heights, Henderson took on an entirely new workout and training regimen created by Peak Performance.
“I’m actually running with a summer track club, which is real different,” Henderson said. “I do a lot of short approach hurdles. We change up the distance of the hurdles to where it’s a different distance but the same rhythm. I do a lot of agility work. I do light weights. It’s real different from high school track.”
His performance at the Southern Association Junior Olympics earned him entry into the Regional Junior Olympics at Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Ala., on July 6-9.
