Yazoo City’s own Fletcher Cox made his second Pro Bowl appearance on Sunday night, and he helped lead a defensive charge that gave up only 31 total yards rushing.
Cox ended the night with two solo tackles and one assist, a strong showing in this type of atmosphere while rotating more than usual.
Despite having no sacks of his own, his play helped teammates rack up seven sacks in the 20-13 loss.
In a game of the best players in the league in a time where points are scored in bundles, the defenses, for the most part, reigned supreme, and Cox was a big part of his team’s success.
His play in the game and throughout the season has him poised to become a fixture in the game for years to come.
Now, if Yazoo could just entice him to come back to town for the football camp, that would be wonderful for the community, but that’s a story for a different day…
For now, Cox just has to worry about improving his craft in the offseason. After all, it is the constant chase to be the best that got him there in the first place.
Federer makes
history
The greatest tennis player in the game’s storied history wrote yet another chapter in his own story in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
Roger Federer, the Swiss Superman, defied the odds yet again when he defeated archrival Rafael Nadal to win the Australian Open in a dramatic match that stretched the length of five full sets.
Already the owner of the record for the most single championships, Federer extended his record to 18 Grand Slam wins.
What is even more impressive is that he did it at 35 years old, making him the oldest player to even win a Grand Slam event.
Federer was the master of the rebound set in the Australian Open, coming back from fourth set losses to win the fifth set 6-3 in three of his final four matches in the tournament against elite players like Nadal (9th in the world), Stan Wawrinka (4th in the world), and Kei Nishikori (5th in the world).
Unlike players like Nadal, Federer’s game is a sustainable one. His strokes are long and smooth, and he doesn’t recklessly throw himself around the court. He’s able to keep himself healthy and in top form despite his age, which is slowly creeping up
To many, it seemed like an impossibility that Federer would ever win on the big stage again, but he’s proved everyone wrong on that account.
And with his declarative statement at the Australian Open, he’s put his name back into the ring of contenders for the remaining three Grand Slams this season.
Atlanta FC building interest
I will only put a small plug in here for those who are interested in following soccer but have no team or tie to any team.
Atlanta FC will have their inaugural season next year, and thus far, the interest has been huge. They’ve already sold 27,000 season tickets with the product unseen.
If you’ve wanted to dive in but had no real way to start, that is going to be the premier Southeastern team.
