Benton Academy’s opportunities to earn another win are dwindling after they fell 21-7 to Porter’s Chapel on Friday night.
The loss dropped Benton’s overall record to 1-8 on the season.
The Raiders struck first in the loss with an 8-yard Cody Prescott touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.
Porter’s Chapel soon struck back, however, when a miscue on a punt attempt for Benton led to a score for the Eagles, making it a 7-7 game at the half.
In the second half, penalties and turnovers led to 14 points for the Eagles, while Benton’s offense never did get going again.
The Eagles took the contest 21-7.
Porter’s Chapel, who had shown a lot of different looks so far this year, went back to their roots offensively by staying in the I-formation for most of the evening.
“That was the best defensive game we’ve played all year,” Burton said. “Hayden Middleton, Cody Prescott, Tolar Purvis and Nolan Whitworth all played great games. The kids are playing hard. We just have to learn to win games right now.”
The Raiders will try and double their win total in their regular season finale on Friday night when they host Greenville Christian School.
The Saints (6-4 overall, 2-2 district), however, will have something to say about that. GCS is coming off of the heels of a 39-21 win over Clinton Christian School.
Burton believes Greenville Christian’s offense could present them with a number of issues.
“Their offense is unreal,” Burton said. “The main thing for us will be ball control. We’ll have to control the clock. They’re a great team, and we’ll have to play hard and control the clock.”
Kickoff at Benton is set for 7 p.m.
