Yazoo County’s dominance was on full display on Friday night when they thrashed Amanda Elzy 47-6.
It was another victory in a long line of victories that have led to Yazoo County starting the season 8-0.
With so much going on off the field around the program, it would have been easy for Yazoo County to just go through the motions.
But they didn’t do that.
And Yazoo County head coach Robert Dobbs is proud of them for it.
“I’m proud that the kids came out and played hard together,” Dobbs said. “We clicked early on offense, and I was proud of that. It normally takes a few games for offenses to catch up with defense. There’s so much timing involved. We had senior night on Friday night, and our guys did not allow the distractions to interfere with their focus.”
The Panthers hit the ground running, and in only a few minutes, they held a 6-0 lead over the foe from Greenwood thanks to a Kenneth Gainwell run.
After a strong defensive effort from Yazoo County, the Panthers got the ball back, turning their possession into a Devarrio Sanders touchdown run, pushing their lead to 14-0.
Laraveon Edwards had his number called towards the end of the first quarter and made it count with a 31-yard touchdown run to extend Yazoo County’s lead to 20-0.
In the second quarter, Cherokee Edwards made his presence felt with a 5-yard touchdown run, making it a 26-0 game at the half.
The second half of the contest was much more of the same. Amanda Elzy was able to get on the board with a touchdown run, but the Yazoo County countered with 21 points to make the final score 47-6.
Yazoo County held the Panthers of Amanda Elzy to under 175 total yards on defense, and on offense, they rolled up 498 yards.
Kenneth Gainwell went 9-for-12 through the air for 93 yards with one touchdown. He also added seven rushes for 88 yards and two touchdowns, including a highlight run that ended in a flip into the end zone.
Devarrio Sanders carried the ball six times for 50 yards and a score.
Cherokee Edwards took his five carries for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Laraveon Edwards ran the ball twice for 51 yards and scored one touchdown.
Kory Gainwell rushed the ball twice for 42 yards and caught a 14-yard touchdown.
Alphonso Ray led the Panthers with 13 total tackles, three of which were for losses. He also chipped in a sack.
Dontrell Green caught three passes for 29 yards in the victory.
Ben Luckett had 10 total tackles, three of which were for losses.
Kenderian Dixon racked up 10 total tackles, two of which were for losses, and a sack in the win.
Kelon Dixon had eight total tackles, three of which were for losses, a sack, and a fumble recovery that he returned for a touchdown.
Shun Demus had six total tackles, four of which were for losses.
Next up for the Panthers of Yazoo County is an away contest against J.Z. George.
The Jaguars are 1-8 on the year after falling 32-24 to Humphreys County this past Friday night.
Dobbs believes his team simply needs to play up to their potential to take home a win.
“J.Z. George plays hard every game,” Dobbs said. “They’re not very big, but they do what they do pretty good. They’ll run a double wing, so we’ll see dives, options, and veers. The key for us is to play at our level and not play down to our competition.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
