The city of Yazoo City will not be participating in the youth summer work program this year after city leaders decided to hire seasonal workers within the public works department.
The matter was brought to the table during Monday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting when Alderman Macklyn Austin said he has received many phone calls about the status of the youth summer work program.
“Even if we don’t bring back the 25 like we use to, I think we should at least do half the number,” Austin said.
Mayor David Starling said he has also received several phone calls about the program. But he reminded Austin of the action the city council had previously approved.
“We voted on it collectively, and you were a part of it,” Starling said, to Austin. “We decided to go with seasonal workers so that they could operate the machinery with public works. We have for the last few years did get our young people, but this year we decided to move with seasonal workers.”
