If you’ve ever spent any time wondering how you will be remembered after you’ve passed on, the life of Cyril Dixon, who died last week after a tragic accident, would be a great example to look to for what’s most important.
Mr. Dixon was not an example of what most people today would define as success. He didn’t have much money or a big list of accomplishments. More often than not, he was in need of a helping hand.
And yet we’ve seen more heartfelt tributes to Mr. Dixon after his passing than we usually see when someone of much higher status dies.
The reason for that is because those tributes aren’t focused on how much money he made or what titles he held. That’s because when it comes down to it, those things pale in comparison to how you treated other people and how often you showed them love.
The tributes to Mr. Dixon have been focused on things like how he often delivered cards to people letting them know he cared about them or how he often told people who had much more than him that he was praying for them.
He was seen walking around Yazoo so much with his rake in hand that he was like part of our town’s identity. And although his life was certainly not easy, we never once heard him complain about it. He would only ask for prayers.
Cyril Dixon’s life is evidence that how we treat others and the love we share is truly the most lasting legacy we are going to leave in this lifetime.
