Yazoo County is on a five-game winning streak after defeating Clinton Christian 12-2 last Thursday before holding off a late comeback effort from Benton Academy for a 6-5 win.
TJ Rials had a strong performance as the winning pitcher by striking out 13 batters. Rials was relieved after a solid performance and returned to the mound in the seventh inning to hold off a late rally by the Raiders and secure the win.
Benton Academy was trailing by six runs in the fifth inning when the Raiders began to close the gap.
The Panthers took an early lead in the first inning with Gabe Shaffer hitting a two-run single and Myron Straughter adding another run with a sacrifice fly.
Shaffer had another RBI single in the bottom of the third. The first baseman went 3-for-3 to lead the Panthers at the plate.
Straughter also had a pair of hits for the Panthers.
Waylen Dewitt, Dalton Robles, Brett Pierce, Tyler Odom and Riley Powell each drove in runs for the Raiders.
Robles went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Benton Academy.
Ethan Shanks struck out four batters in four innings of work as BA’s starting pitcher.
Puckett 7, Benton Academy 6
Benton lost another close game on Saturday with a 7-6loss to Puckett. After trailing by four runs in the sixth inning, the Raiders got hot but couldn’t take the lead.
Odom, Robles and Peyton McGlawn had two hits each for the Raiders. Bryce Ables, Cullen McCain, Robles and Brett Pierce all drove in runs for BA.
Yazoo County 12, Clinton Christian 2
Rials went 3-for-4 to lead the Panthers in a big win over Clinton Christian. He blasted a triple in the fourth inning and had singles in the third and fifth innings for the Panthers.
The Panthers closed the deal in the fifth inning with Graelen Shaffer hitting a two-run double, Myron Straughter adding and RBI single before Gabe Shaffer was struck by a pitch with the bases loaded. James Patterson was hit by a pitch to tack on the last run.
Parker Barron earned the win for the Panthers.
Yazoo County racked up 11 hits in the win with Rials and Barron leading the way with three hits each.
Gabe Shaffer went 2-for-3 for Yazoo County.
