Yazoo County had a 20-14 halftime lead over unbeaten Choctaw Central, but the Panthers were unable to get on the board in the second half as the Warriors walked away with a 28-20 win.
The Warriors scored early with a punt return for a touchdown and had a 7-0 lead with 6:43 to go in the first quarter.
The Panthers quickly responded with Devon Fountain getting a nice kickoff return with a 15-yard face mask penalty added.
Chandler Hardman then had a first down rush to the 20 followed by another carry for a gain of nine. Gabe Shaffer kept it for two yards, and then Hardman punched in the two-yard touchdown.
Cooper Trammell added the extra point kick to tie the game 7-7 with 5:19 to go in the first quarter.
Choctaw scored again on a pass to take a 14-7 lead.
Yazoo County answered when Dakwon Reasor stepped into the backfield and plowed through the line for a touchdown. Trammell added his second kick of the night to tie the game 14-14 with 7:38 left in the first half.
The Warriors were driving when Cornelius Coleman made a critical stop for a loss on third down. Choctaw rolled the dice and went for it on fourth down, but an incomplete pass brought the Panthers offense back on the field.
Yazoo County took over on their own 15 yard line with just under four minutes left before halftime.
Hardman got a big first down gain to midfield, and then followed up with a seven-yard carry. Shaffer added a first down run to keep the chains moving.
With less than two minutes left the Panthers went with a reverse to James Patterson for a gain of eight yards. Hardman then got a first down, but a penalty moved the Panthers back.
The Panthers appeared to be going for the reverse again, but this time Patterson threw the deep pass to Kesean Outlaw for a 27-yard touchdown with just 21 seconds to go.
A fake extra point pass attempt by Shaffer was intercepted, and County held a 20-14 lead at halftime.
Choctaw Central scored on a long run early in the second half to take a 21-20 lead.
Maurico Williams broke loose for what would have been an 11-yard touchdown, but it was called back for a holding penalty.
The Warriors added another touchdown with 3:16 left in the game.
With three minutes left, Hardman got a first down run to the 25. The Panthers were in striking range, but Choctaw made the stop on fourth down to take over on downs with just 44 seconds on the clock.
Hardman finished the game with 29 carries for 213 yards and a touchdown. Shaffer had 10 carries for 46 yards and completed 5-of-7 passes for 50 yards.
Patterson completed his only pass of the game for a 27-yard touchdown and had one carry for eight yards.
Charlie Morton had six tackles for the Panthers, and Rodney Jefferson, Landon Lucas and Devon Fountain had five each.
Reasor and Vinson Woodberry had four tackles each. Coleman, Tradajen Nutall and Maurico Williams and Zyon Blunt had three tackles each.
This week is a bye week for Yazoo County. Next week the Panthers (3-2) will host O’Bannon (4-1) for homecoming. O’Bannon experienced its first loss of the season last week with a 28-20 loss to South Delta.
