Education union leaders are grousing about the $1,500 teacher pay raise that Mississippi lawmakers approved in the final days of the 2019 session.
One of them, Joyce Helmick of the Mississippi Association of Educators, acknowledged that she is not a “numbers person” but contended that the Legislature should have been able to find a way to provide even more.
If so, she and others need to say how. What would they cut? What taxes would they raise?
Grousing doesn’t get anywhere. Offer a concrete plan, with numbers, of how you’d pay for higher salaries if you want people to listen.
