The movie, The Godfather, had a line in it that I will always remember. This line, uttered by one of the gangsters, was simple yet devastatingly descriptive.
Although I had never heard this expression before, I knew instantly what it meant - “He sleeps with the fishes.” That was it. Whomever the gangster was talking about was dead and had probably been dispatched to a river or lake in hopes that the body would never be discovered. The victim was indeed “sleeping with the fishes.”
Skip forward to modern day America. President Trump has dispatched a worldwide criminal, a terrorist, a man who has committed unthinkable atrocities. Once the Hellfire missiles exploded, the world was much better off, and General Qassem Seleimani, although not sleeping with the fishes, was no more.
One would think that everyone in America would be thankful that an American President took care of the nation’s business by taking out a thug that had killed over 600 American soldiers and maimed thousands more. Seleimani had not limited his terrorists’ crimes to killing Americans, but he had killed Iranians, his own countrymen, who were not falling in line with his dystopian dreams. Some observers even postulated that the killing of Seleimani was bigger and more important than the killing of Osama Bin Laden.
Apparently, Seleimani was an arrogant man who believed his press clippings. He moved from country to country fomenting his brand of hate against Americans and against America, the Great Satin. Some reports stated that he may have been as high as the second in command in Iran. His arrogance led him to Iraq where American forces were tracking him. His purpose in Iraq was to stir up trouble against America. Under his leadership, one American had already been killed and several severely wounded. The American embassy in Iraq had been attacked with much damage done to the compound. According to the initial reports that have been posted, Seleimani was in Iraq to lead “something big.” We can be sure that this “something big” involved the killing of Americans.
In the past, many presidential advisers have complained that it is sometimes hard for a president to make a decision. We saw this from Obama during the Somali pirates episode. Bill Clinton had problems making decisions once the problem landed on his desk, so this problem is not a unique one if that president comes from a “swamp culture.” Remember that Trump did not come from the “swamp”, and in fact, ran on the premise that he would “drain the swamp.” Also, as a businessman, he was accustomed to making decisions, decisions that could mean the difference between success and failure. Trump is, also, a risk taker, a man who would push his chips to the middle of the table if he thought that there was a possibility that he was holding a winning hand.
Making the decision to vaporize Seleimani was an easy decision. Cleanse the world of a terrorist and indiscriminate killer, and Americans and the world would be safer.
But enter the Democrats. They have sided with the terrorist. They wring their hands and pontificate on how this righteous killing is going to cause World War III. One leftist even apologized to the Iranians for taking out Seleimani. Adam Schiff, the bug-eyed chairman of the Intelligence Committee in the House of Representatives has announced that he wants to hold hearings, and Pelosi wants to pass legislation to curb the President’s war powers.
Donald Trump has been hated ever since he came down the escalator and proclaimed that he wanted to “Make America Great Again.” The Democrats have made up every lie they can think of to attack this slogan. Perhaps the Dems are correct and the average man and woman in America wants America to be a weak, feckless, nation that no longer stands for individual freedom and individual prosperity. The day of reckoning is coming, and I’m betting that they are wrong.
