Do you get the feeling that the winds of political change are blowing?
Americans by their very nature are competitive. We like football, basketball, and baseball, all competitive sports. We love the NFL, and most of us have favorite teams that we root for.
Last season, I rooted for the Denver Broncos, not because of the city, but because Peyton Manning was the quarterback. This season I will support the New York Giants because Eli is almost a native son and an Ole Miss graduate.
When coaches recruit players, they look for players who are willing to compete. They may not be the most gifted, but there is something in their nature that drives them to win.
When coaches devise a game plan, the first question that they ask is, “Can we compete with the team we are about to play?” That is an important question because it makes the coaches focus on the strong and weak spots within their own teams. Exploit the strengths and somehow diminish the weaknesses drives the game plan..
For some reason, America has lost that competitive spirit.
We wanted to beat the Russians to the moon, and we did. We wanted to win more gold metals in the Olympics than the Russians, and we did.
Last week, a Russian fighter jet barrel rolled over a Navy ship, toying with our men and women in uniform and making the USA appear weak. If Donald Trump had been sitting in the Oval Office, do you think that a Russian fighter jet would have the audacity to barrel roll over a Navy ship belonging to the United States of America? My thoughts are that the Russian fighter might barrel roll over one of our ships, but it would be coming apart from the missile that had just flown up its tail pipe.
We are not competing anymore, and I get the feeling that people are beginning to grow a little restless. No one wants to finish in second place. President Obama almost single handedly has choked off our economy to the extent that we are still in a recession.
Growth is so anemic that our people who are well qualified cannot find decent jobs. College graduates entering the labor market are having such a hard time that they are having to live with their parents.
Small businesses are finding it difficult to survive with all of the regulations placed on them by the Obama Administration. The coal industry has been all but destroyed.
Obamacare is falling apart, yet it is dragging business after business down. In reality, it is the Unaffordable Health Care Act that is siphoning billions of dollars out of the economy. The sad part of this whole act is that medical services have not improved and in fact have worsened since its inception. Deductibles are so high that no one can afford to go to a doctor or hospital, and the worst is yet to come.
Obama, along with “Crooked Hillary” have destroyed our foreign policy and have left our friends wondering what side we are on. We have supported Iran in a deal that even most Democrats recognize as pathetic. Even our feckless Secretary of State, John Kerry, recognized that this deal allows Iran to spend a portion of the $150 billion we gave them to support terrorism.
We are a competitive people. We don’t like to see our nation embarrassed before the world. That is one reason why Donald Trump is as popular as he is. He is saying things that inspire, things that let the world know that our nation is the leader of the free world, and there will be some changes made.
The American people realize that things must change. Our attitudes must change from that of a lethargic child to a strong adult - ready and willing to achieve important goals through fair competition.
Vince Lombardi once said, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” He was roundly criticized for this attitude. But today in America, if we are to remain strong and make this country great, we simply must start winning again. Donald Trump has the right idea. America cannot be the 90 pound weakling with sand being kicked in our faces.
If Trump can deliver on half of what he is proposing, this country will change, and change for the better. Otherwise, Russian fighter jets will continue to barrel roll over our ships, and that will signal the end of America’s greatness.
