Republicans should send a thank you note and a bottle of wine to the Democrats who staged the “sit in” in the House Chamber last week.
This attempt to recapture the 1960s protest mentality did nothing to enhance the Democrat’s attempt to force a vote on “gun control.” All that it did was to show how a group of left-wingers are misjudging the mood of the American people. I watched a little of this spectacle on TV, and it brightened up my day.
The Senate had failed to pass and send to the House a gun control bill, yet these members of the House wanted to vote on a bill that had already failed. Figure that one out.
Our very own Congressman Bennie Thompson was a part of this “gun control” protest. Thank you, Mr. Thompson. I hope that you and the other Democrats will organize another 1960s-style sit in soon. Even that great liberal Democrat lawyer, Alan Dershowitz, noted that this type of activity by the House was a “gift” to the Republicans.
But as usual, when the Democrats give us a gift, the Republicans give it right back. Both of our Senators, Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, voted to force women to register for the draft.
How could these two Mississippians vote to do this? Is chivalry dead? It breaks my heart to see women coming back from the Middle East with missing limbs, blindness, and brain damage. These wounds are bad enough for men, but to say that we are going to put our daughters, wives, and mothers in harms way is not a Mississippi value. Southern women occupy a special place in the hearts of Southern men, and I can tell you that conscripting them into the armed services to be used as cannon fodder is not my idea of protecting our young women.
There are more than enough men to handle the fighting should that be necessary. If young women want to join the service, that should be their choice. However, to be forced to go into combat is something that a gentlemen would never force young women to do.
Both of these senators have lost touch with their constituents, and hopefully we have some good conservative Republicans waiting in the wings. When it comes to bad votes, these may have been the worst,. But our dear senators were not through for the week. They were on a roll, and nothing was going to stop them from making more bad decisions.
Next, when gun control legislation came before the senate, they searched hard to find a bill that they could support. Of course, the NRA was opposed to all of them. as it should have been, yet Cochran and Wicker trudged on. They finally found a bill that they could love, and despite evidence to the contrary, they voted for a bill that had been advanced by John Cornyn (R-TX). None of these bills should have seen the light of day. Gun control is not the answer to Islamic Terrorists attacks. I hope that Cochran and Wicker can figure this out before they vote for a bill that is really bad.
The American people are tired of what our elitist politicians are doing to this country. Each day more and more of our freedoms are being taken away, and our representatives are standing by and letting it happen. Common sense is no longer a positive quality because raw emotion and agenda driven politics have become the order of the day.
Our economy is so bad that over 94 million Americans cannot find work. Our elected representatives have not done their jobs in the last 7-plus years. They sincerely believe that the “common man” is too stupid to understand the important work that goes on in Congress. In the meantime, the “common man” understands that he/she is being sold down the proverbial river.
