Ruby Hammack Vaughan, 90, passed to eternal slumber on May 31, 2017. Born Sept. 6, 1926, Mrs. Vaughan proudly lived her whole life in Yazoo County.
Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her daughter, Cora Vaughan Nichols (Wis) and stepdaughter, Guyla Vaughan Dixon. She is survived by five grandchildren, Andy Dixon (Becky) of Greenville, Charlie Dixon of Florence, Elizabeth Vaughan Johnson of Houston, Texas, Jeff Johnson (Debbi) of Dallas, Texas and Allison Nichols Tupman (Trey) of Vaughan.
Mrs. Vaughan was pre-deceased by her parents, Robert and Katie Hammack; her husband, Charles B. Vaughan; and her daughter, Bettye Vaughan Johnson. She also had many great-grandchildren who proudly carry her memory close at heart.
Ruby – known as Nana to her family – was well known across the community as a kind and generous woman with an incredible memory for long-passed family members and events. Ruby was a crack shot, loved to fish, and could fry a chicken better than anyone. Ruby was an outstanding cook. On family camping trips in the 1950s and 60s, she cooked as well on the camp stove as she did at home. Ruby rarely used a recipe; like most talented country cooks, she was a natural. Ruby loved to work in her garden, which was nearly the size of a football field. Her tomatoes, bell peppers, okra and peas were always the freshest, and she could entice any visitor to help her shell peas in the den. Her favorite pastimes were doing crossword puzzles, playing solitaire and watching Atlanta Braves baseball on TV.
Ruby loved her family and would do anything for her grandchildren. She traveled to Texas often to visit them, and also took them on great Mississippi adventures to the petrified forest in Flora, the cactus farm in Edwards and the Civil War park in Vicksburg. As Allison says, “Spending the night at Nana’s was the best, even if you had to watch the Lawrence Welk show.”
Ruby – Nana – will be greatly missed, but she will always be in our hearts.
Serving as pallbearers were Andy Dixon, Jeff Johnson, Robert Davis, Trey Tupman and Tim Davis.
